The 1980’s lasted longer than 10 years, which is typical for a decade that always felt a lot bigger than it was.
Shoulders were widened by fashion designers, influenced by the likes of Dallas and Dynasty. Hair was just as big, permed or back combed for desired volume or remember the mullet hairstyle inspired no doubt by the series, ‘Neighbours.’
Thatcherism prevailed in this decade of advertising and branding, a sucker really was born every minute!
It was an era of spend, spend, spend!
Boil in the bag ready meals were an everyday favourite and the lethally named ‘Jawbreaker’ inspired serious candy egos, can you handle it? No, seriously, can you?
Finally and some would say, most importantly the 1980’s saw the end of the Speedo type budgie smuggler (an Australian slang term for men’s tight fitting style swimwear). The ‘lump in the front’ apparently resembles a budgie (type of bird) when it is stuffed down the front of someone’s shorts. Ah, the crazy Aussie’s! Much more flattering (and no danger to the budgie) is our very own retro style short, the East Hampton, inspired by the early 80’s period which just goes to show that the 1980’s managed to be the best of times and the worst of times….all at the same time!
